North Carolina Real Estate Continuing Education
From mandatory live CE classes to engaging live and online electives, we have the CE classes you need and the topics you care about.

NC Real Estate CE Requirements: 8 Hours Every Year
All active North Carolina real estate brokers must complete 8 hours of continuing education annually to renew their license. The renewal deadline is June 10 each year. CE hours completed after June 10 count toward the next renewal cycle, not the current one.
The 8 hours are split into two required components:
4-Hour Update Course (mandatory — must be taken live)
- Provisional Brokers and non-BIC Brokers must take the GENUP (General Update) course
- Brokers-in-Charge must take the BICUP (Broker-in-Charge Update) course
- The Update course topic changes each year and is set by the NC Real Estate Commission
- Update courses must be completed in a live format — in-person or livestream. They cannot be completed self-paced online.
4-Hour Elective (can be completed self-paced online)
- Choose from any NCREC-approved elective course
- Electives can be completed in-person, livestream, or self-paced online
- Superior School offers over ten online elective options

FAQs
All active NC real estate brokers must complete 8 hours of continuing education each year. This includes a 4-hour mandatory Update course and a 4-hour elective. CE must be completed by June 10 each year to count toward the current renewal cycle.
GENUP (General Update) is the mandatory 4-hour Update course required for Provisional Brokers and non-BIC full Brokers. BICUP (Broker-in-Charge Update) is the mandatory 4-hour Update course required for Brokers-in-Charge. Both change content each year based on topics set by the NC Real Estate Commission. You must take the version that matches your license status — taking the wrong course will not satisfy your requirement.
Partially. The 4-hour elective can be completed self-paced online at any time. The mandatory 4-hour Update course (GENUP or BICUP) must be completed in a live format — either in-person or via livestream. It cannot be taken self-paced online. Superior School offers both live and online options so you can complete all 8 hours through one provider.
The annual NC real estate CE deadline is June 10. Any CE hours completed after June 10 count toward the following renewal year, not the current one. Missing the deadline will result in your license being placed on inactive status.
If you do not complete your 8 CE hours by June 10, your license becomes inactive. You cannot legally practice real estate while your license is inactive. To reactivate, you must complete the missed CE hours and submit a reactivation request to the NCREC. Complete your CE early to avoid any disruption to your business.
